Leave of absence
It is possible to apply for a leave of absence from your studies for important reasons. To do so, you must submit an application to the Student Secretariat via the Campus portal - student services. Reasons for a leave of absence may include:
- medical reasons
- justified social hardship
- maternity leave/Parental leave and care of own children
- caring for dependent relatives
- studies at a university abroad (except for the recognition of the academic semester as a study semester).
The leave of absence is not counted towards the regular period of study. The leave of absence is only possible for the following semester, not retroactively.
The application for leave of absence for a semester must be submitted to the student secretariat via the Campus portal - student services during the registration period, along with the required evidence. The approval of the leave of absence is granted for a full semester and should not exceed two semesters in total as a rule. Exceptions to this are, in particular, maternity protection/parental leave and the care of one’s own children.
Even during the period of leave of absence, students remain members of the WHZ and are required to pay the regular semester fee. However, there is the possibility of exemption from part of the semester fee by the Exemption of the semester fee.
During the leave of absence, there is no obligation, but the possibility to take exams according to the study and examination regulations.
