This study examines the social consequences of increasing crime in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and its effects on the city’s social fabric. Against the backdrop of rising violent and property-related offenses, the study analyzes how crime influences perceptions of security, social trust, and everyday social practices. The thesis conceptualizes crime as a structuring factor of social interaction within an urban context.

The empirical basis consists of a qualitative study drawing on four semi-structured interviews with individuals from different socioeconomic positions, age groups, and residential settings. The data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis.

The findings indicate that crime intensifies subjective perceptions of insecurity and fosters social withdrawal, generalized mistrust, and an erosion of institutional trust. Furthermore, gender- and class-specific differences in the perception and management of crime emerge.
